Suspension insulators are designed to be connected in a string (usually two or more) to provide higher voltage protection than any single insulator. Suspension insulators are often used on high-voltage transmission towers, as shown in the figure below. Ceramic is by far the most commonly used insulation material, but there are also a variety of glass styles. Porcelain suspension insulators have revolutionized the power distribution industry, providing higher voltage protection - they are used on several 1,000kV DC transmission lines.
