As the name suggests, pin-type insulators are mounted on pins on the cross arms of the pole. There is a groove on the upper end of the insulator. The conductor is passed through this groove and tied to the insulator with annealed wire of the same material as the conductor. Pin insulators are used for power transmission and distribution with voltages up to 33 kV. For operating voltages exceeding 33 kV, pin insulators are required which are too bulky and therefore uneconomical.
